We've been in the Toledo area many, many times, but we've never had time to visit the Toledo Zoo. On our most recent visit in July 2008, we did -- and had a wonderful time!

This is a more "traditional" zoo -- less open access to the animals than at, say, the Columbus [Ohio] Zoo -- thus some of the photos were taken through glass -- but it's very well laid out with plenty of places to eat and drink (it seems very well suited to youngsters in particular).

Among the highlights at our visit were the butterfly exhibit and the nearby outdoor gardens. It's really hard to catch a butterfly on the fly, so to speak, and even when they sit still for a few seconds, getting the best photos requires a tripod or monopod -- neither of which is allowed in the enclosure because they impede traffic in the narrow aisles.
