Skyline Drive, which begins at the North end in Front Royal, Va., is part of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Shenandoah National Forest. This summer, we decided to take an extra day on the way to our almost-annual week at the North Carolina Outer Banks to drive a portion of Skyline Drive.

Arguably the most scenic portions of the roughly 100-mile stretch are south of the part we were able to see without going too far out of our way. And as it turned out, the fog was thicker than pea soup in most places, so we didn't get many truly wonderful photos. Still, it's a beautiful drive, and we're glad we decided to try it.
