Acadia National Park, established in 1916, encompasses more than 40,000 acres and covers nearly half of Mount Desert Island (where the town of Bar Harbor is located) as well as a few smaller islands and the Schoodic Peninsula. It is the only national park in the Northeast, and anyone who is willing to hike or drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain -- the highest point on the East Coast -- can watch the sun rise before anyone else in the United States.
