The Chincoteague and Assateague islands on the Virginia coast are terrific places to vacation. My husband and I visited for the first time in June 2007, meeting up with friends Chuck and Joan from Texas for a week. Needless to say, a great time was had by all, and we all got our fill of taking photographs. This gallery includes some of my favorites.

Assateague Island, by the way, is home to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, home to thousands of birds such as snowy egrets, small animals and a herd of about 150 wild ponies (all that, plus enough mosquitoes to populate the entire state of Delaware). The main attraction, arguably, is the stately red-and-white Assateague Lighthouse, built in 1867.
