For our last hurrah vacation-wise this year, we headed to the New York Finger Lakes (Seneca Lake in particular). We spent our first night in Erie, Pa., splurging a bit to stay at the beautiful Sheraton Bayfront Hotel and Convention Center that overlooks Lake Erie (thanks, Priceline.com, for finding us a great deal). We spent time at Dobbins Landing where the hotel is located (lunching at Smuggler's Wharf) and got lots of photos in nearby Presque Isle State Park.
From there, we drove to the Showboat Motel in Himrod, N.Y., where the balcony of our room was half a football field (or less) from Seneca Lake and we could watch the sunrise.
During our 4 days here, we spent a lot of time at Seneca Harbor in downtown Watkins Glen, even getting in to watch a few cars runs laps at the Watkins Glen International racetrack and taking a quick peek at the rugged Gorge Trail in Watkins Glen State Park. Side trips included north to Sodus Bay to update our old photos of the lighthouse, to historic Penn Yan, the scenic Keuka College and, certainly not least important, visits to several of the wonderful wineries on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
