Sparkling Balls: Jan. 10

Another stay-in day - doubt that it will warm up to 25 chilly degrees. So, back to the keepsakes. This I learned to make from my best friend Marcia's mother, Frances Whitesel. We tied them around our necks like a necklace or bolo. Start with a length of velvet cord, two cork balls, some glue and a ton of short, very thin straight pins and sequins of any (or all) colors you wanted. Splay the ends of the cords, dip a pin in glue and push it through the cord into the cork as far as it will go. Repeat all around the cord and do the same with the ball on the other end. If you want, you can paint the balls - fingernail polish, perhaps - but it's not necessary. On the ball itself, set a sequin; dip a pin in glue and push it all the way in through the hole in the middle of the sequin. Repeat, overlapping slightly, till the entire ball is covered. Do the other ball. Done.
